By Roald Dahl
Hello and welcome back. When I was thinking about how I wanted to review the Roald Dahl books, at first I was going to make a list of his children’s books and go through all of them at once. But I decided to treat the Roald Dahl book like the Jane Austen books and do one book a year.
For this review, I will be looking at this book, the 1989 animated movie and the 2016 live-action movie.
“The BFG is no ordinary bone-crushing giant. He is far too nice and jumbly. It’s lucky for Sophie that he is. Had she been carried off in the middle of the night by the Bloodbottler or any of the other giants- rather than the BFG- she would have soon become breakfast. When Sophie hears that the giants are flush- bunking off to England to swallow a few nice little childdlins, she decides she must stop them once and for all. And the BFG is going to help her!”
For this story, I have three thoughts.
Firstly, I would like to talk about how the BFG talks. For a very similar reason, I recommend that you listen to thing as an audiobook if you’re having trouble understanding it. I enjoy the logic of how the BFG talks. It makes a bit of sense because the BFG has had to teach himself how to talk, and he didn’t get it quite right. I think that the way he talks gives him a lot of character, but what do you think? Am I right or am I left?
Secondly, this is something that I find truly great about the inspiration for this story. Apparently, Roald Dahl told his children that the BFG was responsible for their good dreams and he would blow “dream power” in their window. I love the fact that this childhood story was made into something that so many people enjoy. Also, the whole reason that the child in the story is named Sophie after Roald Dahl’s granddaughter is the cherry on the cake.
Thirdly, there is a bit of a plot hole. The BFG says that he kidnapped Sophie because she saw him, and she would tell people what she saw, and those people would go after him. But honestly, all that would have happened was that Sophie would have been told that she just dreamed it and to go back to bed. She may have even believed it. I am not saying this because I think that this is how it should have gone, because then there would be no story, and a lot of children would have died. But this is just something that stuck out to me when I came back to this story.
Thank you for joining me I truly enjoyed reviewing this childhood classic. But until next week.
Happy reading to all and to all a good night.
