This is a movie that is a critical part of my childhood. In my primary school, when it rained, they would put us in the hall to watch a movie. The main movies we saw were Casper, The Indian in the Cupboard, and this version of The BFG. Now, Casper is not based on a book, and I am a bit scared to look up how racist the Indian in the Cupboard was, so this is going to be the only review I will be doing from this time.

“The 1989 animated classic The BFG follows Sophie, an orphan snatched by a gentle giant. He takes her to Giant Country, where nine monstrous, man-eating giants live. Together, Sophie and the “Big Friendly Giant” devise a plan to stop the brutes by enlisting the help of the Queen of England.”

I enjoyed coming back to this adaptation. The animation looks really good, and it is incredibly accurate, including the way that this movie leans into the darkness that is in the heart of most Roald Dahl books.

For this movie, I have three thoughts.

Firstly, I would like to talk about the character design of the BFG and Sophie. The BFG looks so perfect. It is so close to the book’s illustrations without having to pay for a copyright. But the really fun thing is the reason why Sophie doesn’t look like she does in the book. As anyone who has read the previous review knows, Sophie is based on Roald Dahl’s granddaughter. This adaptation makes Sophie look a lot more like that granddaughter. I find that incredibly sweet.

Secondly, this movie is dark. You will see what I am talking about at the beginning of the movie when we first see the BFG. The fact that you only see part of his face makes the whole kidnapping scene a little bit scary, even when you know the story. Also, later on in the movie, we see the other giants going after children and while staying U or if you are in America G.

Thirdly, I need to talk about the ending. In this movie, the BFG and Sophie go back to Giant Country. This is completely different to the book where those two stay in England and the BFG learns better English. It is suggested that he wrote the book. The idea that the BFG would go back feels wrong because the BFG would be stuck eating snozzcumbers and having no company other than Sophie. It does not seem like any sort of happy ending.
