I have known about the movie for as long as I knew about the book. Also, I believe that if I skipped this movie, I would be hated throughout the internet.

“Sense and Sensibility follows the impoverished Dashwood sisters—practical Elinor and romantic Marianne—as they navigate heartbreak, social class, and financial destitution in 19th-century England, ultimately finding love through a balance of reason and emotion.”

I enjoyed this movie, and it was a great adaptation. I believe that there is a magic formula when you add a classic novel, a large amount of high-class actors and a great budget that leads to a great movie.

For this story I have four thoughts.

Firstly, I find it very interesting that we see the different ways that the Dashwood’s are mourning in the beginning. Mrs Dashwood is constantly crying, Marianne is playing dirges and the way that Margret is hiding and avoiding everyone. This is interesting because the book just says that they fall into their grief, but with a movie, this is the sort of thing you need to show.

Secondly, Margaret. I will admit that when reading the book, I would forget that Mrs Dashwood had three daughters. But this movie changes that. Throughout, we have both Edward and Colonel Brandon go out of their way to be friendly with her. Especially because we see Edward trying to bring her out of her shell. This is great because Margaret’s reaction to her father’s death was hiding.

Thirdly, there is a line where Elinor says to Colonel Brandon that Marianne needs to see the reality of the world, and his response is “I knew a lady very like your sister–the same impulsive sweetness of temper–who was forced into, as you put it, a better acquaintance with the world. The result was only ruination and despair. Do not desire it, Miss Dashwood.” This gives a wonderful change to the story and gives a nice hint to Colonel Brandon’s past, while also showing that there no chance that his feelings will switch from one sister to another.

Fourthly, the handkerchief and the fact that we see Robert and Lucy interacting. To start with I do enjoy that this movie only has one character giving their love a lock of their hair, and it is replaced with Edward giving out his handkerchief. Which is also one of the ways that Lucy proves her and Edward’s connection. This change feel warranted because in his day and age having a lock of someone’s hair feels a bit weird. Now on to Lucy and Robert, when they first meet in the movie, they are very close and flirty. This suggests that she was planting seeds if she needed a backup plan. After all, if is things go wrong with Edward she can just move on to his brother.
